As a Sikh I seek ( to use a bit of humour).

It has taught me that the God of the Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists or any other holy people is the same God. ONE GOD..

It has taught me that there are MANY PATHS to God.

It has taught me that live is for living as happily as possible and enjoying all people and valuing them - there is a richness in the “colours” of humanity. Diversity of languages is an essential part of the Guru Granth Sahib - not all languages are included, but it is not monolinguist.

It is slightly hard to understand because of use of several languages. But richness in the world is hard to understand. You have to make an effort to undertsand different people and their richness.

It has taught me that all people are equal in the eyes of God. It is God alone who decides who is holy and who is not. Women are equal to men. All Sikh instutitions were based on equality of ALL including the langar, bathing in lakes part of Gurdwaras ( Sikh places of congregation where the GURU is present - Sikh can worship GOD anywhere), AMRIT (tranlsated as AMBROSIAL) referring to the hallowed NAME of God and worship of God.

I believe the recognition of EQUALITY OF ALL is part of my holiness in life. It is vital to all societies.

It has taught me that religions are “sects” in the phrase of Guru Gobind Singh. It has also taught me that professional religious persons who get paid for being religious are not the key to holiness. My GURU is the GRANTH SAHIB. I am answerable to GOD in terms of my holiness.

It has taught me the evil in the monopoly of any one religion especially if it seeks to destroy other religions or even different beliefs.

It has also given me some knowledge about other religions and a lot of knowledge about Hinduism and Islam. It has taught me a method of being critical of religions. Guru Nanak gives a critical comment about Hinduism and Islam from a logical rational basis ….not to attack their holiness or the holiness of any religion.

The real guardians of religion are humble people and not professional religious people and defintiely not religious zealots.

It has taught me that reason and religion must go hand in hand - and that reason must not be lost in religious dialogue. Guru Nanak mocked “feeding the dead ancestors”. He compared it to seeking to pour water into Punjab when based thousands of miles away. Superstition is condemned in Sikhism. This is a condemnation of irrationality, failure to use scientific understanding and seeking to deny what people know and can see. Sikhs must embrace rationality and reason in holiness.

Anti-science is anti-Sikhism.

It has taught me to be truly international. Guru Gobind Singh taught about internationalism in his famous phrase ‘One Human Race’ and brilliant verse ‘Bang Ke Bengali’ surveying different parts of the world and affirming their goodness. Guru Gobind Singh mentions many places explicitly including the East as well as specific places such as India in its rich diversity, Nepal ( Gurkhas), China, Indonesia islands, Arabia, Persia (Iran), France/ England as well as West, Africa, etc. He mentions so many cities and towns in India by name.

It has taught me to sing and be poetical in life. Guru Nanak is a sheerly delightful person and his use of poetry is sheer genuis and the use of musical genres in the Guru Granth Sahib to create different moods is truly brilliant. Guru Nanak shows he has a great sense of humour and delights in all the richness of life.

It has taught me that sex is not sinful. Sikhs are not allowed to be celibate. They are taught the value of the gift of sex - children - and living in a loving family relationship. It is part of God’s creation. Guru Nanak even makes a positive comment about holy people who go about naked! This is in the verse on ‘Wonderful’(Vismad) in Asa Di Vaar … ‘Vismad Nagay Firay Jant’.

It has taught me THAT TO BE HOLY REQUIRENESS TOLERANCE AND LOVE OF HUMAN BEINGS and not abstract ideas about religious doctrines. Holiness is based on conduct and not just intentions.

It has taught me to control the mind.

It has taught me to be positive about good health.

It has taught me that SOCIETY/COMMUNITY is vital (sangat).

It has taught me TO BE MODERN. The Gurus were changing society in an equality direction and challenging the prejudices and practices of discrimination against fellow human beings.

It has taught me that LIFE is ONE time opportunity…humans are collectively subject to the reality of death. LIVING A TRUTHFUL LIFE is the answer to death..

The Guru Granth Sahib embodies the idea that THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD.

The GURU is the WRITTEN word today… The Guru is ALIVE when its words are READ, RECITED and SUNG and its message is EMBRACED and it is not a human being…The last human Guru was Guru Gobind Singh …holiness can come in a written form and the stong debates about the written word shows how important it can be…Guru Gobind Singh regarded the Koran and the Puran as equally holy and so on to all religions..

The sword of the Sikhs is less important than the word, although it is an essential part of fighting tyranny…only in some real situations. The sword can only be used against tyranny when no other choice is available … and in democracies there are often real answers…genocide creates the right of physical SELF DEFENCE and not

Most of the time especially in democracies the word and freedom fo speech is the most powerful element.

The Guru Granth Sahib is the written word - mostly praises of God and description of the different praises of God.

It is verses/songs from Gurus, Hindu and Muslim Saints, Some Holy Singers - embracing different roads to GOD.

It is a fundamental core to my life and the CORE teacher of being HOLINESS … although I have to act personally in a holy way in life through being a thinkingand critical being and living a life of love to be fully a holy person.

SO THANKS TO MY ETERNAL TEACHER OF HOLINESS —The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji ( the most respected and hnoured and dear TEACHER in a WRITTEN FORM -translation).
